Satsuma ware (Satsuma-yaki) earthen pottery originated in the late 16th century during the Azuchi-Momoyama period of Japan's history.  It is thought that a Shimazu prince of the Satsuma domain invaded Korea to establish a local pottery industry by abducting skilled Korean potters.

Characterized by a soft, ivory-colored, crackled glaze with elaborate multi-colored & gold decorations, Satsuma buttons portray plants, wildlife, and human figures in timeless poses.

Satsuma ware became popular in Europe after it was displayed in 1867 at the international exhibition in Paris.
